Start with where the unit sits. The City of Salinas does not allow a right-of-way encroachment or a street cut without the proper permit, under Chapter 30, Article V of the city code. Traffic control plans may have to be drawn by a California-licensed traffic control firm and follow the current California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Agricultural Order 4.0, adopted by the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board in 2021, requires growers to track nitrogen applied against nitrogen removed in harvested product, and it ratchets the allowed gap down from 500 pounds per acre at the end of 2023 to 50 pounds per acre by the end of 2051. The Salinas River watershed is named as a priority area, and a board workshop on the proposed amendment was set for June 18, 2026. None of that regulates a rental shower unit directly. The Carmel Fire took another 6,905 acres in the same stretch. Salinas is the last full service city before that back country, so the camps and the support staged down here on the valley floor.
Fire assignments ask one question at the gate, and it is whether the unit carries CAL FIRE approval. Ours does, on the 8-Station. After that it comes down to throughput. Engine crews come off in staggered waves rather than all at once, and eight private rooms means nobody is standing in a line at two in the morning waiting for a room. Flooding is the bigger local emergency and it arrives in winter. In March 2023 the Pajaro River levee failed at midnight and the breach opened to roughly 300 feet. Around 16,000 across the county sat under warnings and orders, and responders pulled about 170 people out of the evacuation areas. A shelter opened at a church right here in Salinas. Down valley, San Ardo evacuated as the Salinas River came up, and farmland across the valley floor went under.

Mission Foods Racing America in early October, plus the INDYCAR season finale, and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in August during Car Week. Paddock crews, corner workers and campers stay on that hill four and five days at a stretch. Route 68 is two lanes through the Toro grade, so a delivery goes in early or it does not go in.
Salinas Municipal Airport takes the California International Airshow every September. The 45th runs September 26 and 27 in 2026 with the Thunderbirds flying. It is a 605 acre field with two runways, and on show weekend it holds performer teams, ground crews and a small army of volunteers with nothing permanent out on the ramp. Ciclovia Salinas closes Alisal Street from Front to Sanborn on October 4, and the setup crew is out there before sunrise. Youth tournaments and sports camps book the Sports Complex and the school fields straight through the summer.

If it sits in the public right of way, yes, you need an encroachment permit, and if you are staging on public land you also need a license agreement from the city. Work in the right of way is limited to non-holiday weekdays from 8 to 4 unless your permit says otherwise. On a private ranch yard, a cooler apron or a fenced contractor lot, none of that applies. How to size a shower trailer for a Salinas Valley harvest crew
Sizing goes wrong here for a reason that has nothing to do with counting people. Everybody counts the crew correctly. Then they assume showers happen evenly across the day, and on a harvest ranch nobody showers evenly across the day. The crew comes off the block together. That wave is what you size for, not the head count on the roster.
So start with the pull-off time. Write down when each crew actually stops working. A 40 person crew that finishes at one in the afternoon and heads for the trailer as a group needs four to six rooms to clear in about an hour. Ground first. A rolled turn row holds a loaded trailer. A field edge that was irrigated two days ago does not, and neither does soft fill after a winter storm. Gravel is ideal. A cooler apron or a ranch equipment yard is better still.
