The build crew, the stagehands, the riggers and the vendor staff are on that ground for a week before a gate opens, usually in heat, usually on a dirt pad with no permanent facility anywhere near the work. This is a freight city and it always has been. San Bernardino International Airport is the old Norton Air Force Base, which started life as the San Bernardino Air Depot in 1942, went on the closure list in 1989 and turned civilian in March 1994. Its single runway is 10,000 feet, long enough for anything flying, and it moved 669,500 tons of cargo in 2025. The Eastgate air cargo center on the field covers about 100 acres with a 658,500 square foot sort building, two ground support buildings and parking positions for 14 all-cargo aircraft, feeding as many as 26 flights a day. The rail side is just as busy. BNSF works three main tracks up the Cajon Subdivision and averages 65 to 75 trains every 24 hours, mostly double-stack intermodal, and the third main track finished in 2008 pushed the ceiling far higher. The intermodal yard sits right next to the 1918 Santa Fe Depot downtown. Union Pacific uses the same corridor. South of the river the two main lines cross at Colton, rebuilt as a flyover so the trains stopped waiting on each other. Every one of those facilities schedules turnarounds and maintenance windows on nights and weekends, with contract crews brought in for the window and gone after it.
Civil work adds the rest. The I-215 widening between the 10 and the 210 added a general lane and a carpool lane in each direction through the middle of the city, and Caltrans District 8 still has the University Parkway interchange on its list up by the college. The Arrow line has carried passengers from the San Bernardino Transit Center out to the University of Redlands since October 24, 2022, and it is the home of ZEMU, the first federally compliant zero emission passenger train in North America. Track testing on that corridor happens at night. Downtown, the 43 acre Carousel District sat cleared after the mall came down in 2023 and is waiting on its next developer.

Will the hot water hold if twenty people shower back to back?
It will, as long as the supply is right. The heater is rarely the limit. The 1.5 gallon per minute heads keep the draw low enough that recovery stays ahead of the queue, and each room mixes its own hot and cold so nobody is stealing temperature from the next stall. Where it does get tight is a bare pad on tank water with no resupply. On those jobs we plan the water delivery alongside the unit instead of hoping 200 gallons stretches.

How to size shower stations for a San Bernardino crew, shift by shift
Almost every call starts with a head count, and a head count on its own tells us very little. Forty is not a number. Forty across a nine hour day is one unit and a relaxed afternoon.
