OCTA and Caltrans broke ground in June 2026 on nine miles of Interstate 5 between I-405 and SR-55, straight through Irvine and Tustin. It adds one general purpose lane each way plus auxiliary merge lanes and ramp work, and it runs in two segments. I-405 to Yale Avenue finishes in mid-2029. Yale to SR-55 goes to late 2029. That is three-plus years of night work on a corridor carrying more than 275,600 vehicles a day. Crews come off tack coat and saw slurry at 4 a.m. and there is nowhere on a freeway shoulder to get clean.
The Great Park is the other long build. The Canopy is a 12-acre, 90,000 square foot retail and restaurant project that broke ground in April 2025 for a late 2026 opening, with a WWII hangar being converted alongside it as Hangar 10. Building 369, a 30,000 square foot adaptive reuse of a base-era structure at Marine Way and Skyhawk, went to bid in early 2026 with construction starting that summer. Two prefabricated railroad tunnels are due in April 2027. A 10,000-seat permanent amphitheater is in final design. None of that ground has a permanent crew washroom on it.

The fires that reach Irvine come out of the canyons to the east and north. The Silverado Fire started October 26, 2020 near Santiago Canyon Road and burned 13,390 acres, pushing south off Loma Ridge toward Orchard Hills, Northwood and Portola Springs. About 90,000 people were evacuated. Two Orange County firefighters were critically burned. The Bond Fire followed that December out of Silverado Canyon Road and took 7,375 acres. What power does a portable shower unit need?
The 8-Station draws from one 50 amp 220 volt circuit. The smaller units, including the ADA + 2 and the 2-Station combo, use two 120 volt 20 amp circuits.
